Ambarnath Temple

Ambarnath

About

Situated on the outskirts of Mumbai in the suburban city of Ambarnath, this Shiv temple is a foundation that serves as a religious and architectural memoir of a time long gone. The temple is said to date back to the 11th-century during the reign of the Shilahara dynasty. Historians believe that the temple was sanctioned by king Chittaraja, while legend suggests that the Pandavas themselves carved the temple in just one night using a single stone.

The structure of the temple has a few peculiar features which have contributed to its long-lasting fame. The sanctuary which houses the shivling idol is based underground and the shikhara tower above it is open-air as its construction was never completed. The mandapa also has three porches instead of one. The architecture resembles the Vesara style, a blend of Dravidian and Nagara temple making. During festivals such as Mahashivratri, devotees from all parts of India visit Ambarnath. Its architectural beauty and peaceful ambience make it a destination well worth the journey.
