Vijaydurg Fort

Vijaydurg

About

The oldest fort on the Sindhudurg coast, Vijaydurg lies in the Devgad Taluka of Sindhudurg district. Surrounded by the Arabian on three sides, it was earlier known as ‘Gheria’ as it is situated in the Girye village. Built in the regime of Raja Bhoj of the Shilahar dynasty, the fort was constructed between 1193 and 1205. In 1653, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj seized this imposing fort from Adil Shah of Bijapur and renamed it Vijaydurg as the Hindu solar year's name at the time was 'Vijay', making it the 'fort of victory'.

Vijaydurg is the largest fort on the coast and stands mighty owing to its fine and impeccable architecture. This fort was also known as the 'Eastern Gibraltar' as it was impregnable for a long time due to its locational advantage. Constructed using laterite stones, the wall of this fort has witnessed some of the greatest leaders. If you happen to be in Ratnagiri, this is one historic wonder that shouldn't be missed. A visit to the Vijaydurg Fort and learning about Maharashtra's maritime legacy is one that will stay with you for many years.
