About

Karla Caves are one the oldest monuments of the Buddhist empire constructed between the 2nd century AD and the 5th century AD. These well-known caves represent the highest achievement of rock-cut architecture of the time and the earliest examples of ornate and richly decorated temples in India. The most popular aspect of the caves is the Grand Chaitya or one of the largest Chaityagrihas - a Buddhist prayer hall, which showcases some of the most intricate artwork.

The Karla Caves are sure to enthral you with their majestic appeal. Part of the caves is accessible to tourists who have to hike their way up the 350 steps cut in the rock. The caves, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, welcome you with its beautiful horseshoe-shaped entrance and enamour one and all with its stupendous craftsmanship.
